Fete de la Musique - Kalamazoo

On June 21 downtown Kalamazoo will be transformed into a musical paradise. Musicians from all different backgrounds and genres will be able to share their art and love of music with the community in outdoor and/or indoor venues. Whether you’re a professional musician, amateur, or belong to a rock ‘n roll band, Fete de la Musique will inaugurate the first day of summer and celebrate the “art of the musician”.

About the Fete “Originale”

The original Fete de la Musique began in France 25 years ago. An annual tradition, Fete de la Musique has expanded its reach and currently is celebrated on the same day in more than 300 cities in 108 countries. To visit the French Fete de la Musique website, click here.

Do I have to be a professional musician to participate?

All musicians are invited to participate.  Whether you are in a student ensemble just learning your instrument or are part of a blues band that gigs around town, we want you!  Classical, jazz, rock, country, latin, R&B, vocal ensembles, solo instruments, and many other genres, we want you! Where will the musicians play?

Because this is Kalamazoo’s first-ever Fete de la Musique, a number of venues have been secured to be “stages” for the musicians. The Fete de la Musique coordinator will match up musicians and venues and schedule times for performances.

Do the musicians get paid?

Musicians Participating in Fete de la Musique are not paid, and all performances are free to the public.  In addition, volunteers and businesses will be donating their time and services to support this project. In the spirit of Fete de la Musique, June 21 is a celebration of music-making!

Rain, Rain, Go Away…

Both outdoor and indoor venues have been scheduled for the day. In the event of rain or inclement weather, we will resume outdoor performances when the weather permits. Check the Fete de la Musique concert schedule for a listing of venues and times.

Who’s coordinating this event?

The Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo in collaboration with Downtown Kalamazoo, Incorporated spearheaded the concept and laid the framework for this project.

After this initial year, it is hoped that Fete de la Musique will become an annual event that will grow and expand from year to year. If you would like to get involved with the Fete de la Musique – Kalamazoo project, please contact us.
